Nutritional Support for SARS, A Review of Scientific Studies
by Dr. Ron Steriti

SARS is a lethal infectious respiratory disease that emerged from China and rapidly spread across the globe killing 161 people, mostly in Asia. Health authorities are recommending extraordinary measures to hat its spread in China and Canada. SARS has been identified as a new form of coronovirus, a virus that causes colds and respiratory illnesses that may develop into bronchitis and pneumonia. Currently there is no clear treatment for SARS. Antibiotics are ineffective and patients are not being helped with standard antiviral drugs. What nutritional supplements can prevent SARS?

There is very little research on SARS, and only a few studies on nutritional supplements. Three research articles were found on vitamin C, black tea, and charcoal, clay and clay minerals. Vitamin C is well known for its use in colds and flu. Additional anti-viral and immune supporting supplements can be used to help prevent infection.

Research Studies on Coronavirus

Vitamin C

Chick embryo tracheal organ cultures showed increased resistance to infection by a coronavirus after exposure to ascorbate (vitamin C). (Atherton, Kratzing et al. 1978)

Black tea

Crude theaflavin was extracted from black tea and assayed for activity against coronavirus; the EC50 was 34.7 micrograms/ml. (Clark, Grant et al. 1998)

Charcoal, clay, and clay minerals

Adsorbent agents including charcoal, clay, and clay minerals were tested and found to have excellent capability of adsorbing coronavirus in vitro. (Clark, Sarr et al. 1998)
