O God, thou who art the source of light and life of this world. We give thee praise and thanks for another year. We offer this day our prayers and thanksgiving for the common things of life, as well as the wondrous works of your creation which sustain us. We come not only individually, but as a nation in what can only be described as a dark midnight of the soul. Yet we ask of thee forgiveness of our sins of yesterday.
We have come to this moment at both the end and beginning of another year in both celebration and joy.
In such a time as this surrounded by the great quietness instilled by thy presence, yet en- gulfed with so many uncertain- ties of tomorrow, we ask that you re-clothe us in our right minds. Remind us, 0 God, during these times of war and rumors of war that we cannot put out the hellish fire of destruction and death with the mighty firepower of missiles and munitions. Give us the appetite to somehow study war no more and to hunger and thirst after righteousness and peace.
Dear God, take away the horns of nations and replace them with halos of harmony. Take away violence in the world and replace it with your peace, which passes all understanding. Help us to love one another. Teach us how to become worthy of our living experience, that we may even offer to you our pains, our sufferings, our miseries and ourselves.
