3. What is Mind/Body Medicine?

Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine believed that health is a state of harmony that exists among mind, body, spirit, and the external environment. He said, "the natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well"; thus we all possess the power to heal ourselves, to some degree, once we integrate and balance the mind, body, and spirit with our surroundings. Natural therapies support this concept because they are based on and work with the mind/body connection.

The growing realization and evidence that mind/body techniques such as meditation, yoga, visualization, hypnosis, and relaxation therapies have a significant effect on disease has blossomed into what is commonly called mind/body medicine. The basic concepts of this approach are:

  • The mind has a central effect on physical health
  • The best way to heal is to treat the whole person
  • The people should take an active part in their own health care
  • By exercising psychological control, people can prevent or reduce the effects of disease.
